Orientation consisted of necessary announcements and the introduction of the seven happiest people I had ever seen — the camp staff. They were so bouncy, I was afraid they might injure themselves.

The counselors threw themselves into spreading their fervor. They coerced the children and their parents into singing songs and other excesses. I found myself struggling to retain my dignity as I was asked to pretend I was a squirrel and “shake my bushy tail.” How humiliating.

I made a major effort that first night to let go of my inhibitions. I was unsuccessful. My fellow inmates, however, seemed to have no trouble finding their inner child.

Katie and I (and five other parent/child pairs) were assigned to the Delaware tribe. Our counselor encouraged us to yell the loudest, make the straightest lines when waiting to enter the “campfire circle,” and in general, show the most spirit.

I don’t think I won any points for my enthusiasm.
