A meeting was held on April 15 at the Rappahannock Public Library to develop a Healthy Families initiative for Rappahannock County. Mary Pat Hoadley, District Administrator from the State Health Department, presided over the meeting.
Linda Holstead from Healthy Families Virginia addressed the group. Present were representatives from the Health Department, Social Services, the Headwaters program, Rappahannock County Public Schools, the Literacy Center, RappahannockRapidan Early Intervention Council, and the Division of Child Support Enforcement. Also in attendance was Sheriff Larry Sherertz.
According to Ms. Holstead, Healthy Families “is an approach. It is not a program.” A number of cities and counties in Virginia, as well as nationwide, provide similar programs. Healthy Families America is based on a program that was started in Hawaii a number of years ago.
Healthy Families seeks to provide education and support services to first-time families. Parents would receive support in such areas as parentchild interaction, a child’s access to health care, and school readiness.
