County residents may see Scud missile mock-ups, Humvees, light armored vehicles and helicopters on the morning of Sept. 18. The Marine Corps Warfighting Lab announced that it will conduct a Capable Warrior Limited Objective Experiment in the region that will examine command and control procedures and experimental sensor systems used for mobile target location. No live ammunition or weapons will be deployed, and residents are invited to contact Marine Corps representatives on the day of the exercise if they any questions (703-784-5165 or 5166).
In other activities:
• John McCarthy reported that VDOT approved a ban on truck traffic on Route 1001 in Sperryville, has agreed to post lower speed limits on Routes 642 and 640 between U.S. 211 and Route 729, and will continue to evaluate lower speed limits on the remainder of Routes 642 and 640.
• The Board deferred decision on approval of new contracts to upgrade telephone systems and services in County offices. The recommended bids came in at an aggregate amount of approximately $92,000 compared to a budgeted amount of $71,500 and the County Administrator will investigate possible bid reductions.
• The Board approved a fencing contract to Crawford Fence in the amount of $21,850 for the new trash transfer station.
• The Board approved the drafting of a resolution supporting a dedicated funding source for land conservation in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This resolution was proposed by the statewide Conservation Land Coalition, and asks that the General Assembly set aside $40 million per year from the real estate recordation tax to be used for the land conservation efforts. The Washington Town Council deferred action on a similar resolution at its September meeting.
