An important component of the center’s programs will be their tree planting and native plant species efforts. John Kirchner and Lyt Wood have helped provide trees to give out for planting over the last few years.
Last year, with help from the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, they purchased 3000 trees to give away - white oaks, sycamores and white pines.
The survival rate of the trees has been good the last couple of years. However, the drought has caused problems for trees planted this year. Where over 90 percent of the trees planted over the last two years have survived, Kirchner says that the survival rate this year has been 50 percent or less.
Other objectives for Ragged Mountain Resource Center include working with Rappahannock and Orange County Schools, and other school systems, to develop experimental educational programs. Another objective is to continue enhancing the county library’s “County Corner” resource shelves.
They are also developing a working relationship with Shenandoah National Park archaeologists and historians, as well as the Rappahannock Historical Society, to identify sites in and around the park of historical interest and significance to the community.
