The Virginia Watershed Awards were set up to recognize individuals, organizations and communities for excellence in protecting their watersheds. Recently, Ragged Mountain Resource Center received an honorable mention for being a major contributor in the Rappahannock River watershed’s water quality awareness ad improvement efforts.
Ragged Mountain Resource Center, located at Oldway Art Center in Sperryville, is a non-profit organization that focuses on sustainability of the Rappahannock River Watershed and Blue Ridge Mountain Bioregion.
The center helps coordinate educational and recreational activities throughout the year. For 1999, activities include continuing the Second Saturday Hiking Series and Speaker’s Series, in addition to their Water Music Festival and Art Show.
The center will be expanding their recreational programs to include women’s hikes with Mary Boudreau Bittinger. Ms. Bittinger says that the women’s hikes are more for casual hikers, and not as rigorous as the Second Saturday hikes.
Other events of note for this year are bike excursions, canoe trips and overnight combinations of hiking, biking and boating. Some activities will be in collaboration with groups such as Friends of the Rappahannock, based in F redericksburg.
Center Director Hunt Harris says that there will be a moonlight hike of Old Rag in either September or October. There are also bonfires in the town of Washington on special occasions, such as Halloween and after Christmas.
