“Guantanamera” is the RAAC movie scheduled for Sept. 17. It will be shown at The Theatre on Gay Street at 8 p.m. and will introduce many of us to the life and color of Cuba today. This is the final film of Tomas Gutierrez Alea, Cuba’s greatest filmmaker and director of “Strawberry and Chocolate.”
This is a graceful, romantic comedy - a road movie that combines sharp social satire, subtlety and impassioned humanism. It is the story of a famous diva who returns after many years to her hometown of Guantanamo - and drops dead in the middle of a nostalgic .reverie.
.Accompanying the body back to Havana are her niece Gina, a maturely sexy ex-professor blacklisted for political nonconformity, and Gina’s husband Adolfo, a priggish official who seizes the opportunity to implement an elaborate hearse relay-system that only a bureaucrat could love.
