Guitarists Jimmy Bruno and Jack Wilkins are drawing jazz enthusiasts from far and near to “Little” Washington for an upcoming concert at The Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m.
Their concert at the Theatre in 1998 was a near sellout, and indications are that the 1999 concert will be the same. Reservations have already been received from as far away as Tennessee, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Richmond.
Randall Kremer, of the Smithsonian Institution, will introduce the program again this year.
Bruno and Wilkins perform frequently as soloists, as well as with other world renowned musicians. As a duo they have played at the JVC Jazz Festival in New York and as part of the Benedetto Players concert series. Among their numerous CDs are “Bluesin.”
Wilkins’ just released recording on the String Jazz label, and Bruno’s “Live at Birdland-II,” issued earlier this year on the Concord label. During their Sept. 25 concert at the Theatre in Washington, Bruno and Wilkins will preview some of the music they plan to record together in England in January 2000.
Reviews of Wilkins’ and Bruno’s concerts and recordings have been outstanding. Of Jack Wilkins, The New Yorker wrote “superlative guitarist, wild melodist,” while The New York Post called Wilkins “a guitarist’s guitarist...a deft and focused soloist with a riveting sound...”
