The Rappahannock County School* Board celebrated the new school year by dealing with issues ranging from the Advanced Placement (AP) program to the School Resource Officer* in a five hour marathon session.
The September meeting opened! with an in-depth discussion of the AP program by RCHS teachers Jeanne Grimes, Laurel Van Horn, and Roger Flinchum. The three RCHS AP teachers spoke of the opportunities and advantages that AP courses provide to students, including the chance to engage in collegelevel studies while in high school and the acceptance for credit of coursework, by some colleges, if a student scores above a minimum on AP tests.
RCHS currently offers AP courses in three areas: U.S. History, U.S. Government, and English Literature and Composition. Grimes, Van Horn and Flinchum concluded the presentation by expressing their concerns that the Board would eliminate the AP program in favor of the International Baccalaureate (IP) program that they have been investigating, and requested teacher involvement in any such decision.
