These beautiful designs may represent individuals in Wenger’s symbolic curriculum. As I have indicated, some of the “vessels” are decorated with gold beads sewn with gold thread, rendering the hanging slightly three dimensional. The brilliant colors and designs of Vessels and Wells” may have been inspired by Byzantine mosaics.
“Adinkra Symbols” is African in character, as the title indicates. The colors are subdued earth tones and pastels, with black. This hanging, also of silk and paper, features a number of women bearing water jars as well as images of eyes and abstract tribal signs. Its calm, neutral nature is appealing in a way that other abstract paper collages framed behind glass are as well. There are 11 of them in the show.
