Should old structures be torn down?
On Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m., the Washington Town
Council will hold a special meeting to hear the
case for - and against - the proposed demolition y Sunny side Farms. The decision of the architectural Review Board to allow demolition of arts of the Mercantile building and summer house has been appealed to the council.
There are some who feel that the buildings on the proverbial “chopping block” have historical value and should be saved. Are they right? It might bear repeating that the ARB unanimously approved what Sunnyside Farms is proposing.
There were a few minor concerns, but the ARB members did not seem to have a problem with the proposed demolition. It may also bear mentioning i.iat they met twice on the matter before approving all components of the proposal.
Whatever the Town Council decides, should they ailow the demolition or overturn the ARB’s decision, someone is not going to be happy. And depending on v\ hat the Council decides, this issue could be far from oeing resolved.
Regardless of how you feel about the proposal, if vou have an opinion then you should make yourself heard at this special meeting. This promises to be interesting, to say the least.
