Each year, eleven million American adults lose a parent. By age 62. about three-quarters of us will have lost both parents. This loss has been the source of much thought and scrutiny by baby boomers, who will have had their parents longer than any previous generation. Many note that the loss of a parent can be the defining moment in the surviving child’s life. It has been noted that, for hundreds of famous writers, artists, philosophers, and politicians, the death of a parent was an adaptation that tapped their creative energies. Some seemed to be spurred to greatness. The experience can stimulate individuals to pursue new heights of performance. Such is the instrument of death and the perspective it engenders.
