Rappahannock County residents Kinsey Wharton and James L. (Jimmy) Compton were honored last month in recognition of their long service with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
Equipment repair supervisor Kinsey Wharton began his career 30 years ago as a mechanic helper. Over the years, he has handled repairs and maintenance on all types of cars, trucks, heavy machinery — bulldozers, motor graders, loaders and snow removal equipment.
As manager of the Warrenton residency equipment shop, he challenges his workers to improve service and safety and to make the equipment the best that it can be. "The wheels are always turning," remarks resident engineer Bob Moore, referring to Wharton s ability to come up with creative solutions.
In 1999, Wharton and his team were chosen to receive VDOT's Commissioner's Award for Excellence.
He and his wife, Debbie have two children, Mike and Cindy. In addition to woodworking, Wharton likes to spend his spare time with his grandson, Ben.
Jimmy Compton has done maintenance on county roads for the past 25 years. Assigned to Rappahannock area headquarters, he has operated almost every type of machinery used by VDOT, from mowers to snow removal equipment. Anything with wheels on it!" explains the crew member.
Compton has been a fire department volunteer since 1970. He enjoys farming, raising cattle and mowing grass for others.
