Unlike last year, a sufficient amount of vaccine is available for this flu season, so people who are not considered high risk for complications from the flu are also encouraged to get the shot beginning in November. The vaccine takes about two weeks to become effective after getting the shot.
So far this year no cases of influenza have been reported. January and February are typically peak flu months in Virginia, but increased flu activity can last into March. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20,000 Americans die and 110,000 are hospitalized during an average flu season because of complications from the flu.
