CHLORINE: After the weirs, the pipe from the settling tank takes the water down this staircase. The white bucket-like structure at the top of the staircase is a chlorine drip. The chlorine is added to the water to kill harmful bacteria that have remained in the water through the prior stages of treatment. The water flows down a staircase after the chlorine to aerate it, which give the water the proper oxygen content required by the Department of Environmental Quality.
