Final results for the Virginia Standard of Learning (SOL) test scores are still not in, as Rappahannock schools prepare for the upcoming school year.
“We were told to expect the final results sooner rather than later, but I don’t see it happening,” said School Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell to the Rappahannock County School Board during Tuesday’s meeting.
More importantly, preliminary scores showed math scores for the sixth, seventh and eighth grades were at significantly lower levels than the required 70 percent passing rate.
“The initial results for Grades 6 and 7 seem out of line,” Chappell said.
Chappell said that these results might originate from flaws with the testing process.
“Several other Virginia schools have noticed abnormally low scores in the same grades,” he reported, “We are not alone.” Chappell said that the State Superintendent has met with members of concerned schools and suggested a task force to review the testing process.
Preliminary scores for Rappahannock County High School were encouraging, according to Dr. Chappell. “We don’t think that there is any doubt about fall accreditation for the high school,” he reported.
