What should government do? Loudoun County zoning can reduce sprawl, avoiding extra vehicle miles. We need a Virginia climate plan - many states already have one. The federal government must start taking climate seriously. Tighter vehicle mileage standards and stricter power plant emission controls are immediate opportunities. So is rejoining international climate discussions.
Government research is needed on climate and alternate sources of energy — wind, solar, geothermal, nuclear and hydrogen. None is an immediate silver bullet. But research must not be an excuse for delay.
The 2006 and 2008 campaigns are under way. Let’s make sure global warming is in every candidate’s platform. It’s not a partisan issue - it affects every one of us, bom or unborn. We have a wonderful opportunity to prove what Americans can do for the world’s future. Let’s not miss it.
