Gold in the hills
The heart of the gold mining region is around the junction of Spotsylvania, Orange, and Culpeper Counties near and on the Wilderness Battlefield. If a Civil War battle had not been fought there, one could speculate that some other conflict centered about gold might have taken its place. Scores of old mines are in this area (At least 75 mining operations are known to have existed along the ‘Swath de Oro’). One shaft was notably plugged with concrete during the construction of the dam at the Lake of the Woods on Rt. 3 east of Culpeper. Not far away, Lake Anna State Park still allows panning for gold today.
