object when infinite riches beckon. Stock in local mining outfits also sold well sometimesincreasing 10 fold in value in the 19th Century. It’s likely however, that stockholders made out better than both miners and owners.
Copper in the
Blue Ridge
In addition to gold, a more humble metal also attracted attention along the Blue Ridge. Tantalizing green streaks in the mountain rocks suggested the presence of copper in these hills, particularly on either side of the Ridge near present day Skyland. In the 1880s, the Richards Mining Company sunk a 100foot shaft on the western slopes below Stony Man. Another surface operation was located in Dark Hollow on the eastern slopes. Remnants of equipment from the latter effort may still be seen on the trails below Skyland. Yet another mine is said to have existed in Rappahannock County on Mount Marshall. Each of these endeavors had two things in common: on one hand, there wasn’t much copper to be found, but, on the bright side, the hype was high. Do we sense a little exaggeration in order to sell stock? Naw, stuff like that never happens.
