DECHLORINATION: From the stairs, the water is piped through a dechlorination machine. The white plastic pipes on the top of the machine contain tablets of a “dechlor, ” a chemical that removes chlorine from water. If left in, the chlorine would be a dangerous pollutant to life in the Thornton river, the water's eventual destination. The chlorine and dechlor stages of treatment will eventually both be replaced by the Ultraviolet light fixtures recently acquired by Rappahannock County. The light will perform the bacteria killing job of the chlorine without any additional chemical additives. Currently, after the dechlor stage, the water is piped underground to the Thornton river, where it is discharged much cleaner than when it entered the plant. t
