In these days of “virtual reality” and other high-tech thrills, a visit to the Shenandoah National Park still ranks high on most visitors’ list of enduring pleasures. A ride in the Park to view the Fall colors has been a must for millions of visitors for more than a half a century. But the Park offers unique attractions the year around.
Spring and summer have their own special charms; so does the solitude of winter. The best time for “breathtaking” views of memory, clear of the blue haze that sometimes minimizes long-range views of the surrounding countryside, is after a cool front has come through. Even with the haze, however, views are magnificent.
In sum, the intrinsic value of something is often less important to us than the memories it holds. Unquestionably, the Shenandoah National Park is priceless in our collective memories for what it “means” to us. Our Park is a philosophical concept in our shared heritage as well as a place. Keep this thought in mind as you enjoy your next visit to the Shenandoah National Park.
