THE BUG TANK: This large tank of brown water is the first stop for the 55,000 or so gallons of wastewater processed at the plant. The tank is filled with millions of microscopic organisms that feed off the tiny food particles present in Sperryville's w?-:tewater. The “bugs,” as Jenkins calls them, break down the small solids that have made the trip from the town's septic tanks, and begin the process of cleaning the water. The bugs produce their own waste, but it is much less active with harmful bacteria than human waste. Sometimes, when a rainstorm floods the plant, the bugs are washed away, and can take several weeks to replace. % m
