Identity theft scam
Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz has advised Rappahannock residents to be on the lookout for identity theft. Unsolicited phone calls that request a social security number are a common method of identity theft, and a scam recently gaining attention among area law enforcements involves jury duty. Victims are called by a person claiming that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of the victim because they missed a scheduled jury duty. When the unsuspecting victim claims that they were not notified of any jury duty, the caller asks for their social security number for verification purposes. In Rappahannock County, court officials do not call asking for social security numbers, and any caller claiming to represent Rappahannock County and soliciting social security information is probably fraudulent. “It’s just a rule of thumb that you shouldn’t give out your social security number to an unsolicited caller,” said Larry Sherertz.
