Wakefield celebrates
International Week
The Leonard E. Cowherd Auditorium looked like a world bazaar on Friday as Wakefield Country Day School (WCDS) students, staff and parents celebrated the last day of International Week, November 13-17th.
Imane Bethaj, a student from Casablanca, Morocco, made several hundred savory and sweet brewat (little pies with various scrumptious fillings) to the delight of WCDS students and staff. Imane, dressed in her native takchita, shared maps, history, objects and food from her country.
International Week allows WCDS students the opportunity to learn about other countries; identifying what we have in common and ways we may differ.
The week began with the appearance of Wakefield first and second grade students and ASPECT students at the Rappahannock International Celebration on November 12th. They sang songs, hosted booths about their countries, and modeled their traditional dress. On Wednesday, lower school classes interviewed international students in small groups in the auditorium, asking them about their childhoods and details of life in their country. International students made PowerPoint presentations about their countries during Wednesday’s school assembly
During the week students learn to apply research and presentation skills by studying and displaying information on other cultures. This year twenty-two countries were represented at International Day: France, Spain, Ireland, Norway, Mexico, Greece, Japan, Egypt, Italy, Sudan, South Africa, Korea, England, Portugal, Brazil, Morocco, Germany, Turkey, Belgium, Viet Nam and Peru. Lower school students were given passports to register their visits
