For over 20 years, she has conducted her workshop Building a Vocal Community that has utilized African and African American history, values, cultural and vocal traditions to work with singers and nonsingers alike.
She believes that one of the most powerful ways to experience community is through song. “All songs are stories,” Ysaye says. “They teach us, heal us and inspire us to be in genuine community together. Songs put us in touch with our ancestors, give us roots and strength.”
Barnwell has known Paul Reisler since the early 80s when she helped coach his musical group Trapezoid. She has taught with Ki Theatre artists Julie Portman and Paul Reisler at songwriting retreats and workshops throughout North America.
Barnwell travels extensively now as president of Sweet Honey in the Rock, performing and conducting her workshops several times a month.
