Trouble was, that 12 gauge didn’t have a break-open lever on it. To open the action, after you had fired the gun, you pulled back on the trigger again, and the gun would break open for reloading.
Well, you know what happened to a scrawny 11 or 12 year old, up there in the mountain, with unsure footing, trying to hit a squirrel in the top of a big hickory tree. When that old Stevens kicked, the recoil would about knock me down, and reflexively, I would pull back on the trigger. More than once, I wound up on the ground, with the open gun in my lap.
