Keep the good times rolling the day after Thanksgiving. Celebrate a Community Thanksgiving Sing at the Schoolhouse in Sperryville.
Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell, leader of the internationally renown African American women’s a capella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, will lead a Community Thanksgiving Sing of traditional spirituals and songs of celebration on this Friday after Thanksgiving, November 24, at the Schoolhouse in Sperryville, Virginia at 8 p.m.
Barnwell is a vocalist with a range of over three octaves and appears on more than twenty-five recordings with Sweet Honey as well as other artists. However, she didn’t start out her career in music.
“It wasn’t my choice actually,” laughed Barnwell in an interview. “It was a path I got sent on while doing other things.”
“I wasn’t planning on a career in music,” mused Barnwell although she admits to always loving and studying music. In fact, her father taught her how to play the violin before she was three.
