Virginia’s House of Delegates, led by Del. David Albo (R-Fairfax) last year took away the right of farm wineries to distribute directly to restaurants, customers and retailers. They must now pay a distributor, and many have lost a third or more of their business.
“There’s something completely wrong about that,” Berger said.
The distributors donated $49,000 to Albo’s campaign fund. Albo kept a bill that would have preserved the small wineries’ rights bottled up in his committee.
“If we need to buy our legislature back for 50 grand,” commented Mark Bunter, the Chrysalis winemaker, “it’s a deal.”
