There are entire research papers written on the subject of men's and women's holiday shopping habits. Google it, if you don't believe me. Females, compared to males, according to one such study, were found to start Christmas shopping much earlier, purchase more gifts and embark on a greater number of shopping trips.

Yes, yes, men hunt and women gather. We all know that old chestnut, and there's no doubt that at least some vestiges of those prehistoric tendencies indeed remain with us.

But the crucial difference between the genders' shopping habits, as I see it, is not just in terms of frequency or number of purchases, but of extravagance and scale.
