ers who install riparian buffers, filter strips and wetlands and build fences to keep their livestock out of streams.
Riparian buffers and filter strips are forested or grassy areas planted near bodies of water to improve water quahty by absorbing excess nutrients and preventing erosion.
A 100-foot buffer can reduce sediment runoff by 97 percent, nitrogen runoff by 80 percent and phosphorus runoff by 77 percent, according to the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Through March, fifty-four farmers in Rappahannock County were participating in CREP. Thanks to the program, nearly 580 acres of riparian buffer and 30 miles of streams have been restored in tbe county. Another 122 acres of buffer are in development. . The practices have prevented thousands of pounds of soil, nitrogen and phosphorus from ending up in Rappahannock waterways.

In Rappahannock County, the main pollutants of concern are E. cob and other fecal coliform bacteria, which are indicators of the possible presence of more harmful bacteria.
The main sources of fecal coliform bacteria in county waterways is in-stream defecating by cattle. CREP helps farmers pay for fences that keep livestock - and their feces - out of waterways.
