Scholarship Fund” has once ;igain been launched to give 25 young people who participate in the Starfish Mentoring Program the opportunity to attend one of the local camps this summer. Initiated by toe mentors themselves, who have seen how valuable such experiences can be for children, Headwaters invites community members to make a donation to Starfish for this purpose.
Program Coordinator Carol Lucking says she hears from many adults in toe community that they would love to be mentors but just don’t have the time. Earmarking a donation for Summer Camp might be toe perfect solution for those who want to be involved in helping a young person to thrive. Susan Jones, a long-time mentor, says, “Camp gives my mentee an opportunity to build friendships in a different social environment beyond school, where skills can be developed and socialization happens in a relaxed way. The proof is in the fact that she wants to go back, year after year.” Many Starfish youth would not be attending camp were it not made possible by Headwaters mentors and contributors, according to Ms. Lucking.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to “Starfish Summer Camp Scholarship Fund.” Mail your check to Headwaters, PO Box 448, Washington, VA 22747. Call Cole Johnson at 675-1819.
