Whiting is no stranger to this area A native of Clarke County, Virginia, he grew > surrounded by the beauty of the Shenando ah Valley. Although occasionally painting still life compositions, florals, and street scene.', the focus of his-work continues to be landscapes

He describes his work as “somewhere between impressionism and realism in t n>. pursuit of paintings that evoke a stillm-s.-., serenity, beauty and mood.-’

After receiving a B.A. from the Univer.'it. of Virginia, Whiting spent time in Europe and California and credits early California ai ti. such as Edgar Payne, Maurice Braun and Alison Clark as very influential in his artistic direction.

He considers himself self-taught, however, relying on some thirty years experience as a painter.

Whiting states, “Experience is the best teacher, I think. All artists are seeking to capture that elusive magical moment when what is before you comes to life. I try to preserve an element of randomness in my painting process by scraping with a palette knife, blending wit5 ( a large brush or adding an arbitraiy color tl _ might mimic itself. Nature is always the ultimate inspiration. It is these moments of magic and infinite possibilities born in the creativeprocess that keeps me painting. I can look at my work from a few months back and see differences in the way I would paint it now. 1 think every artist should be able to say that A
