The Baptist Church of Jesus Christ at Thornton’s Gap (as the name appears in the church records) was constituted November 12, 1787 of a number of persons who professed their faith by immersion in baptism, a few were former members of Mt. Poney Church which was near Culpeper, Va.
The first pastor was Elder John Koontz. Members of the church first met in a brush harbor, and in 1788 the first meeting house was built of log, on land sold to the congregation by the Bryan family. This meeting house was located where the current Thornton Gap Primitive Baptist meeting house now sits.
In 1832 a piece of land was given to the church by Adam Pennybaker and Evans Bragg “on top of the. hill.” Between 1833 and 1834 due to the condition of the old log meeting house it was determined to build a new building on the hill. By 1834 this was completed, measuring 50 x 60 feet, with a gallery for the black membership.
During the late 1820s and early 1830s there arose among the Baptists some ideas that many felt were not scripturally based like missionary societies, for example, which finally caused a division in Thornton Gap’s congregation about the middle of 1832. Seeking help from sis
