The Virginia Department of
Environmental Quality (DEQ) reported at Public Meeting on March 22, 2007 at the Rappahannock Library, the results of their study of the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for 16 “303d impaired” stream segments in the Upper Rappahannock River watersheds.
Three of these 16 impaired segments are in Rappahannock County: the Rush, Hughes, and Rappahannock Rivers. Segments of the Thornton are also on the impaired list but were not included in this TMDL study.
The stream segments are called “impaired” due to high levels of E.Coli bacteria, which means the waters are not safe for human contact activities such as swimming and wading.
