Two and one-half millennia ago, 300 brave and somewhat sepia-toned men with very red capes - at least as far as the movie “300” portrayed them - lugged their spears and shields over rugged countryside from their homes to the place of battle, to lay down their lives between hot gates.
This Spring brings the 29th Annual Fodderstack 10-K Race, which will run from the Vierling’s Packing Shed in Flint Hill to Washington.
Slightly fewer than 300 runners will lay down only thenpride in an attempt to become the best of the best - and at least they won’t likely be wearing those goofy leather drawers those Spartans were burdened with.
The hordes from the east are kept at bay, partially, by the sacrifices of these brave, happy few. Okay, the athletes are not quite as ripped as King Leonidas and company, but the place they defend has a great deal more scenic beauty than grim northern Greece!
