ms weexenas two productions mark the formal launch of the new Castleton Residency for Young Artists and builds on the success of their “pilot project” in 2006 with The Turn of the Screw, another Britten masterpiece. In announcing this program, Lorin and Dietlinde Maazel explained, “We have been inspired to create an annual residency in the belief that opera affords an ideal vehicle for young artists in different disciplines to live and work together in the unique, intimate setting of Rappahannock County and our Theatre House in Castleton.”
Graduate students from Julhard, Curtis, Peabody and other leading music schools and young professionals from the Young Artist Program at the Metropolitan Opera, among other major companies, will be performing at this exceptional performance.
As a gift to the community, there will be a private dress rehearsal at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 13, for high school students from the local community, including music students, some foreign exchange students, and kids who are in the Starfish Mentoring program.
There are two performances open to the public of this chamber opera production: opening night (Saturday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (April 15 at 4:00 p.m.). There may be a few spaces available for Saturday’s benefit opening night, but one’s chances for reservations are better for Sunday afternoon’s performance.
There is a suggested contribution of $75 per person ($35 for students) for the Sunday performance. The opening night performance which includes a reception with the cast has a suggested contribution of $100 per person.
