would like to see more small retail on Main Street. However, it seems logical, given the seasonal basis of tourism and the thankfully small number of residents, that businesses would need to have a primary presence on the web, or some other kinds of distribution (like Central Coffee). We visited our son and family in LaConner, Washington, in February. It is a town of 750 people, located in rural Skagit County. The formerly flourishing fishing industry has declined. The lumber company in town is closing. LaConner also has a seasonal ' tourist trade. One of the most successful businesses on their main street is The Olive Shoppe. It sells a wide variety of olives, olive oil and related products, including four or five kinds of capers. This business could not survive on walk-in traffic. However, they have been so successful with their web based business that they bought the building next door, knocked out the wall to join the two and opened the Ginger Grater (all kitchen supplies).
