Nicole and Eve decided to illustrate the book using “manga,” a Japanese style of art. Each “detention demon” is displayed in a comic art setting, human illustrations feature other manga style points with large, expressive eyes .and a small, simple nose and mouth. “The manga style worked very well with the theme of the book,” Mack pointed out, adding that he was very pleased with Espinola’s tenacity in producing the drawings.
Espinola took the lead in the project and began sketching out illustrations last summer and finished the project in February.
“I was a little concerned about whether or not I would do the “demons” justice,” Nicole said, “but I always had a dear image of what I wanted them to look like; it turned out to not be a problem.”
Celia said that customers have marveled at the drawings, as they thumb through the story. “When we tell them that it was a high schooler that did this, they are amazed at the professional quality,” said Celia about Espinola’s artwork. “She could certainly do this as a career.
Espinola, on the other hand, said that she has no plans yet on what she will do after high school although she enjoyed the opportunity. “I’m glad I did it,” she said, “I liked doing it and I would be willing to do it again in the future.”
