Rappahannock News Staff Writer ^ I? the ongoing debate over Dominion Virginia Power’s proposal to build another 500,000volt electric transmission conidor through part of Rappahannock and other counties, there is one thing the power company and its opponents agree on: energy conservation is a good thing
But the similarities end there.
The two sides disagree sharply on how much responsibility utilities have for encouraging consumers to use less power and whether conservation is enough to erase the need for additional power lines.
Members of the Piedmont Environmental Council and other opponents of the new power line corridor have claimed that new transmission lines would not be necessary if Dominion fully explored the possibilities of energy conservation in Virginia.
Electricity demand in Northern Virginia has increased 40 percent dining the past decade and is projected to grow another 8 percent by 2011, according to Dominion’s Web site.
