Monroe is our miracle dog. A golden retriever/irish setter mix, no one ever expected him to live to be 14 years old. This is well past the normal life span of either breed. To top it off Monroe has had some extra challenges.
Any health problem either breed is prone to, seems to have shown up in Monroe. For his entire life he’s struggled with epilepsy, multiple allergies and ear infections. Within a few months of getting him it turned out he had heartworm!
The treatment for that at the tune was to pump him full of drugs containing arsenic and hope the drugs killed the heartworms rather than the dog! The really tough part of this treatment is that after it’s administered the dog must be kept quiet and unexcited for several weeks. This is a pretty big challenge in any dog.
