The town of Flint Hill was established on March 27, 1843, by an act of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia, 10 years after Rappahannock County was formed from an area that was previously a part of Culpeper County.
Prior to that, a post office had been established for the community in 1823. Several theories have arisen as to the origin of the name.
It is known that there was a family in the vicinity by the name of Flinn, and records also indicate a family with the last name of Flynt although neither of these names were listed among the trustees of Fl'nt Hill, named in the act that established the town.
The most prevalent theory is that the town was named for the white rock that is found throughout this area, which, in fact, is quartz, but is known by many as flint.
