a big challenge. Just walking on our hardwood floors is likely to result in his legs going out from under him in all directions.
Our vet says the signals just aren’t getting from his legs to his brain the same way they used to. There are all kinds of things going wrong and I won’t bore you with the details. The real diagnosis is that Monroe is suffering from old age. As if the indignity of having trouble walking wasn’t enough, he’s going deaf His eye sight isn’t what it used to be.
And, yet, he wakes up every morning cheerful and ready to meet the day. After multiple failed attempts at the stairs between the main floor and basement of our house, he’s still game to try again. (We’ve blocked them off since we can’t convince him to give up the attempt!) He still believes he’s our guard dog and works hard to fulfill his duties. He’s a great example of how to grow old and he’s teaching me lessons I didn’t expect to get from a dog.
