cl 3 ' \ I The town of Woodville was established by an act of the General Assembly in 1803. and a post office was established the same year. It is generally believed that the town was named for the Rev. John Woodville, who came to St. Mark's Parish in 1794. All of the original streets were given tree names. Woodville was a thriving community in 1833, when Rappahannock County was formed, and was given serious consideration as the county seat. Washington was chosen as the county seat, it is said, because it was more centrally located in the new county. In November 1863. Col. John S. Mosby, CSA, established his headquarters in the town of Woodville. In 1929, Woodville was struck by a major tornado.
