This village is shown on John Wood’s 1821 map of Culpeper County; Rappahannock County had not yet been established. It was / possibly named for a man named Sperry who built the first house there, or perhaps for another Sperry who ran the stage line.
In the notes of Francis Thornton Jr., c. 1818-1820, mention is made of a town laid off by Thornton on a small plain between the Thornton River and the hill$ of the northern Blue Ridge. The post office was established in 1840.
The Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission has named the'entire town of Sperryville to its historic districts register. The Commission singled out the architecture of Sperryville for particular mention.
