HISTORIC SITES. From Page 54 The Skyline Drive Historic District, which crosses several counties from Front Royal to Rockfish Gap, has been on the : registers since 1996, with t additional properties added in 1997 and 2003. This historic district includes 31,900 acres, nine buildings, 136 structures and 22 objects. The area inside the Skyline Drive Historic District is noted ? for part it has played in political, | conservation, recreation, social i history and transportation issues. Periods of significance are } 1925-1949, and 1950-1974.

! Saving our past About four years ago, efforts were started to add more

| Rappahannock County homes to the Virginia Landmarks Register.

[ At the time, almost 200 properties were surveyed by an

1 architectural history consulting firm. A “reconnaissance level" survey was done on 169

j properties, and 25 more received s “intensive" study. Of the 25, 17 were

| recommended for nomination to the Virginia register. Hopefully, the properties I surveyed since that time - as well i as others - will qualify for a j listing on the Virginia Landmark ■ ■■ Register, the National Register, or ! both.
