The town was originally called Happy Creek Gap, from the name of the stream which rises here and flows through Front Royal.
The name was changed to Chester’s Gap in the 1700s, after Capt. John Chester bought a tract of land on the west side in what is now Warren County. The town was referred to as Chester Gap in the journals of soldiers who had to march over the mountain during the Civil War.
There were two settlements in Chester Gap, one called Williamsburg, for the number of families who lived here with the name Williams, and the other called Chester Gap.
In 1954, when a post office was desired, it was thought this would be more easily accomplished if there was one name, and it was agreed that the new name would be Chester Gap.
