Along the main roads and back in the hollows of Rappahannock County are numerous historic homes. In recent years, the owners of these properties - whether they are the latest in a long line of generations, or a newcomer to the county - have earned a listing in the National Register of Historic Places or the Virginia Landmarks Register.
The National Register is administered by the U.S. Park Service, and the Virginia Registry by the Department of Historic . Resources. Currently, Rappahannock County has 10 historic properties listed on both registries.
Earning a place on either registry is a meticulous, often time-consuming process, but the rewards make it all worthwhile. In.addition to the satisfaction of knowing that they have preserved something of value from the past, property owners are entitled to generous tax credits based on the amount spent for rehabilitation of historic structures.
