In return we’re trying to make sure that his last years are some of his best. He regularly gets hamburger mixed with his dog food. He’s got lots of medications to take but doesn’t seem to mind them when they’re wrapped in strips of bacon or buried in a plate of tuna.

While he’s never been a really cuddly dog, he seems to be enjoying the extra affection we’re giving hiin these days. While I can’t make his old age fun, I can hopefully help him find some of its compensations.

I’m making mental notes as I watch him. The indignities and infirmities of old age are down the road for all of us assuming we’re lucky enough to live so long! I’ve been blessed to have Monroe show me how to move into old age with grace and joy. Now I just need to work on my napping skills!
