Over the mountain, officials of the Town of
Front Royal made news last week proposing
that they would not go along with the new state “abusive driver” fees that went into effect on July 1. However, the most recent flare-up cooled, as town leaders decided to table the proposal, so they could discuss its effectiveness.
Why was a small, rural town the first to challenge the rules?
As the new fees are enforced across the state, rural motorists are likely to know from experience what its like to get a high traffic ticket - simply because they didn’t see the reduced speed sign at the edge of town, or weren’t paying attention and were picked up on radar.
They don’t want to pay a month’s wages for that mistake, or lose their license if they can’t pay.
On the other hand, some drivers in heavily populated areas like Northern Virginia believe they can still travel 10 mph over the speed limit, as they ' pass wealthy drivers being “taxed” for their daily 86 mph joy ride.
