Washington, VA, is the county seat of Rappahannock County, and is the only incorporated town in the county.
Originally and Indian trading post, the town was established by act of the General Assembly on December 14, 1796, and a post office was established here in 1804.
There is still some question as to whether a young George Washington actually surveyed and laid out the town, but, as the official surveyor of Culpeper County • of which Rappahannock was then a part - it certainly seems reasonable that he did.
In Washington's field notes, there is reference to a half-day journey from Culpeper in a northwest direction, and “in the Blue Ridge Mountains of. Culpeper County, I laid off a town.”
