Jonathan Butler connected with junior wide receiver Dean Hogan for 11 yards. On the following play, Butler dumped the ball to senior running back Tim Fitzmorris, who rumbled 23 yards to cross midfield. Butler found Hogan again on the next play, this time for eight yards to move the Panthers to Mason’s 41-yard line.
Then the rally began to look like it was over. On second-and-two, Fitzmorris lost two yards on a running play. On third down, Butler was sacked at midfield for a loss of seven yards.
The Panthers were facing a fourth-and-11, but Coach Williams caught the Mustangs off guard by calling a running play. Running back Brook Stokes took the handoff on a reverse and darted 13 yards around the right side to pick up the first down and keep the drive alive.
Then the wheels began to fall off the rally bus. An illegal procedure penalty set the Panthers back five yards, Butler threw an incomplete pass and that ended the third quarter.
The Panthers were playing into the wind to begin the fourth quarter. A questionable holding call set them back another five yards and negated a 22-yard pass to Fitzmorris, making it third down and 20 from the 47-yard line.
Stokes picked up 12 yards on the next play to set up a fourth-and-eight situation from the 35-yard line. The Mustangs knocked down Butler’s pass on the next play to end the drive.
By that time, the skies had opened up and began dumping a rainstorm that seemed pulled out of the Old Testament.
But Rappahannock didn’t quit fighting, even though they were behind 42-0 with only half a quarter to play.
The Panthers got a second chance at the end zone after Mason fumbled on the next play and the Panthers recovered.
Three straight passing plays failed to net any yardage for the Panthers, so Butler kept the ball on fourth and 10, battling his way to the 24-yard line for the first down.
Two plays later, Stokes took the ball around the left sideline for a 24-yard score.
“My kids will never quit,” Williams said. “I told them at halftime that we just gotta relax and have fun.”
Stokes led the Panthers in rushing with 65 yards on nine carries. Hogan had five receptions for 42 yards.
